Bushwick's history is written in its walls, and a plumber reads it house by house. In the 1880s this was the beer capital of America - fourteen breweries in fourteen blocks, and the brewers' mansions still standing on Bushwick Avenue prove the money was real. The workers lived in wood-frame rowhouses that filled the side streets, and those frames, sided over in vinyl and asphalt shingle, are still the neighborhood's signature housing.

Then came 1977. The blackout fires took whole blocks that summer, and the years after hollowed out more. What followed, through the 80s and 90s, was rebuilding - city-backed infill housing rising on the burned lots. So a single Bushwick block today can hold an 1890s frame, a 1992 infill rowhouse, a converted knitting factory, and a 2018 condo, shoulder to shoulder. Four eras. Four different ways to fail. The frames come first, because wood construction changes the plumbing math. Supply lines in a frame house run through exterior walls with whatever insulation the decades left behind, and a hard January snap finds Bushwick pipes before it finds brick-neighborhood pipes. The burst announces itself during the thaw, not the freeze, and water moves through wood framing fast - a split line on the third floor of a frame house reaches the first-floor ceiling while you're still looking for the shutoff.
