Most Brooklyn laterals are vitrified clay, laid in short sections with a joint every few feet, some of them over a century in the ground. Clay pipe itself holds up surprisingly well. The joints don't. Every joint is an invitation for roots and a place for sections to shift. Closer to the house, the run is often extra-heavy cast iron, which rots along the bottom of horizontal stretches first — the pipe looks whole from above while the channel underneath is going.

Then there's the pre-war house trap, the big U buried near the front wall. It catches debris, it's a frequent failure point, and half the homeowners we meet learn it exists when we point the camera at it.

Method follows the pipe's condition, not preference. Lining, bursting, and open excavation each carry their own costs, and the camera decides which ones are even on the table.
